Blossom: Country in bloom showcases work by First Nations women artists that draw upon floral and botanical impressions of Country.

Highlighting the deep connections First Nations women have to Country, and their careful and powerful nurturing of it, this display celebrates the abundant beauty of the landscape and brings to bloom its many cultural, spiritual and ecological seeds.

Across land and water, artists explore an abundance of plant life with intimacy and restorative care-grasslands, tree bark, bush daisies, desert roses, wild honey flower and waterlilies.

Whether meadows of wildflowers, tiered desert vistas or rippling aquatic surfaces, Blossom: Country in bloom bears witness to the awe of nature and bursts with a bright and beaming intensity.

Appealing to the prismatic way Country reveals itself, in all its manifestations, this display replicates not only what is found in nature but what is held deeply in creation and Dreaming beliefs.

Through prints, paintings, textiles and woven metal, Blossom: Country in bloom considers the material means through which Country is represented and understood. Internationally celebrated artists such as Emily Kam Kngwarray and Judy Watson feature alongside lesser-known artists, whose contributions as makers and cultural practitioners are significant.

Spotlighting historical and contemporary works that have not been publicly shown until now, Blossom: Country in bloom brings attention themes of environmental connection, maintenance and sovereignty that continue to inform artists today.

'And for me to break that and step into [a male-dominated space], it was time to give that culture a bit of a shakeup. And to make them aware that the voices of the women, they do matter.'
Aunty Gail Mabo
