This year Bonsai Week celebrates “Women in Bonsai” with internationally renowned artists Heike van Gunst and Sandra Grlica from Germany joining us for a week of events, workshops and tours.

Heike has styled and grown bonsai since she was 15. She is an avid contributor amongst the bonsai community in Germany. Heike founded the Bonsai-Arbeitskreis Hamburg & Umland Club in 2007. Since 2016, Heike has been the Chief Editor of the German Bonsai Art magazine, she also writes articles for the German Bonsai-Fachforum. Heike regularly acts as a translator for international bonsai artists.

Sandra has been a bonsai artist for the past 15 years. She has been involved in many events and bonsai shows throughout Europe and represented Germany at the Ruago Penjing show in China. Sandra studied under the bonsai master Mauro Stemberger. Find Sandra on instagram!

Bonsai demonstrations

Drop into the National Arboretum Canberra Village Centre to watch international bonsai artists Heike van Gunst, Sandra Grlica and Collection Curators explain and demonstrate the art of bonsai. Join the intimate setting to get a close up view of the techniques used. Demonstrations are free and no bookings required.

Guided tours

This is your chance to get close up and personal with the Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia (NBPCA). If you are interested in Bonsai, do not miss this interesting and informative tour with Leigh Taafe, Curator of the Collection. Hear about the history, the stories and the styles behind these living sculptures. Tours are free and no bookings are required. Please meet at the entry to the NBPCA. Please note, there is no tour on Friday 29 March.

Japanese calligraphy exhibition
Monday 25 ' Sunday 31 March 2019, 9:00am ' 4:00pm

Visit the exquisite Japanese Calligraphy Exhibition by artist Teshima Tairiku in the Village Centre at the National Arboretum Canberra. In September 2009, Tairiku Teshima received the Princess Takamado Price, awarded to artists that promote exchange and dialogue between cultures by calligraphy.

Learn how to style and look after your very own bonsai! This workshop covers the essentials for creating, styling and maintaining bonsai and offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from the Curators of the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia.

Discussion forum and critique
Friday 29 March, 1:30 ' 3:30pm

Join internationally renowned Bonsai artists Heike van Gunst and Sandra Grlica from Germany and Leigh Taafe, Curator of the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia. The panel will cover a wide range of topics and welcomes questions from the audience. Find out more about our guests speakers, what motivates them, their personal journeys, what international trends influence them and even the challenges of working in a male dominated field.

Bonsai after hours ' Women in bonsai

The premier event of Bonsai Week 2019, Bonsai After Hours, will feature a simultaneous demonstration by international bonsai artists, Heike van Gunst and Sandra Grlica from Germany. See the experts transform raw materials into bonsai masterpieces, then have a chance to bid on the trees and other items at auctions throughout the evening.

Soak up the spectacular views across Canberra while enjoying delicious canapes and a drink on arrival in the Village Centre. Mingle with bonsai enthusiasts, meet the guest artists, enjoy the sunset and see the National Bonsai and Penjing Collection of Australia under lights. Cash bar will be open. We look forward to your company!
